Who we are

Explore Mongolia Differently

Mongol Trails takes you beyond the well-travelled routes and into the landscapes, communities and traditions that make Mongolia unique — from the Gobi Desert and Khövsgöl Lake to the Altai Mountains and Orkhon Valley.

Our expeditions are for travellers who want to experience Mongolia, not simply see it. Travel with knowledgeable Mongolian guides who know the land intimately, connect with local communities, and share the stories, traditions and perspectives that bring each journey to life.

With roots in both Mongolia and Australia, we offer a cross-cultural perspective that connects East and West.

We believe the best journeys happen when you slow down and become part of your surroundings. Stay in traditional ger camps and tents, and travel with local drivers who know the remote tracks and changing conditions.

Book directly with us and discover Mongolia through genuine local connections — travelling not simply as a visitor, but as an explorer with a deeper connection to the people, culture and landscapes along the way.

What travellers say

Reviews

Real travellers. Genuine stories. A deeper connection with Mongolia.

“Travelling through Mongolia with Mongol Trails was a once in a lifetime experience. The tour couldn’t have been easier. From the start it was obvious how much effort Oyuka and Boko had put in to ensuring everything ran smoothly. The tour never felt sluggish either - a big bonus of travelling from Murun is cutting out a lot of the long travel days so you’re on the go from the moment the tour starts. The group was the perfect size, and the guides and local families we met made the whole experience feel genuinely special and personal - I particularly appreciated how much Mongol Trails focused on making sure the tour was ran in such a way that supported and benefitted the local communities. The landscapes and nature were incredible, but what really stood out for me was experiencing Mongolian culture through genuine interactions with local people. It never felt like we were simply ticking off an itinerary; it felt like a real adventure and an authentic Mongolian experience. Would absolutely recommend, and will undoubtedly be returning! Advice: - good sleeping equipment - try not to bring too much packaging/disposable plastic (if at all) - patience with Mongolian timing 😉

Travel with Purpose

Go beyond the itinerary - Meet the people. Ride the land - Share the journey For us, travel is about more than seeing a new place. It is about creating meaningful connections, supporting local communities and leaving a positive footprint behind. Mongol Trails was created with a simple belief: tourism can contribute to a more sustainable future for Mongolia. We work closely with local guides, herder families, horsemen and communities, creating opportunities for local people to benefit directly from the journeys we organise. By travelling with us, you are not simply visiting Mongolia — you are helping support the people and places that make these experiences possible. Supporting Local Communities We believe tourism should create meaningful opportunities for the communities we visit. We work with local people wherever possible, helping support livelihoods and keeping more of the value of tourism within local communities. We also contribute practical support to remote herder families and communities where we have established personal connections. Preserving Culture and Tradition Mongolia's cultural heritage is deeply connected to its land, animals and way of life. We want future generations to have the opportunity to understand, value and continue this heritage. Our journeys create opportunities to meet local families, learn from their traditions and experience Mongolia through genuine local connections rather than simply passing through as visitors. Caring for The Land Mongolia's landscapes are vast, beautiful and fragile. We encourage responsible travel practices throughout our expeditions — from reducing unnecessary waste to respecting wildlife and natural environments. We follow Leave No Trace and Pack In, Pack Out principles, taking responsibility for what we bring into remote areas and ensuring rubbish is carried out with us. Creating Opportunities for The Next Generation Mongolia's future depends on creating opportunities for young people to stay connected to their communities, culture and heritage while developing skills for the future. We want our work to contribute to opportunities such as English language learning, cultural exchange and practical sustainability education. Travel That Gives Back Our commitment is ongoing. As Mongol Trails grows, we want to deepen our community work and develop longer-term initiatives that provide practical support to people and communities in need. For us, responsible tourism isn't a label. It's something we want to put into practice — one journey, one community and one meaningful connection at a time. Travel with Purpose When you travel with Mongol Trails, you become part of a journey that goes beyond the itinerary. Meet the people. Ride the land. Share the journey. Leave something positive behind

Reading the Steppe

Across Mongolia’s open steppe, knowing where to go comes from experience, observation and a deep understanding of the land. Herders recognise mountains, rivers, valleys and distinctive landmarks to understand where they are and how far they have travelled. Clouds, wind direction, temperature and changes in the sky can reveal what weather is approaching — sometimes long before it arrives. The condition of the grass, water sources and grazing areas helps herders decide where animals should move and when it is time to relocate. Distance is often judged by time, terrain and the movement of animals rather than road signs or kilometres. No GPS No road signs No signal. This is knowledge built through living with the land.
